Vacation is just not what it used to be

posted in Mom Rants, Traveling With Children |

I’m back at work today after almost 2 weeks off, and at least 10 people have asked me, “how was your break?” or “did you have a nice vacation?” It is then that I am reminided that “vacations” and “breaks” with a kid aren’t really what they used to be.

We took the little man to Florida for 6 days last week to visit the in-laws.  And let’s just say it wasn’t exactly relaxing.  This is not my idea of a “vacation”:

  • Waking up at 5:30 Eastern (when you’re on Central time).
  • Going to Holiday dinner at the “club” and wolfing down your meal in under 30 minutes.
  • Spending less time with your husband on vacation than you do at home because he’s playing golf most days with your father-in-law. (He did let me sleep in 2 days though)
  • Having your child scream like a newborn every time he had to nap or have his diaper changed.
  •

I think one of my NMFs put traveling with children the best:

“Tomorrow won’t be easy as our flight is at 3:30 (nap time). I am giving up on the planning- if I have that miserable crying child on the plane, I’ll deal and vow to not do this again for at least a year.”

Here’s to being at home, and back in the routine.
